This motor starts and runs well when warm. Occasionally (maybe 20% of the time), when I try to start it cold, it starts briefly (for a few seconds), dies and then is difficult to start. (Assume that I squeezed the gasline bulb a few times, pulled out the choke/primer, and set it on maximum idle.) Any advice on what to do in this situation?

You have a lean condition, either the primer is not working properly, the idle mix is lean or the carb is dirty.
