Mercury Lower unit fit problem

I bought a used lower unit from the same year and hp as mine a 115 4cyl. mercury force. I installed a new impeller kit and went to put the lower unit on the motor and found that both the motor and lower unit have a silver metal tube coming out of the same spot (looks like the speedometer pickup its just in front of the f-n-r shaft) I need to take one of them out so that the lower unit will slip on flush with the motor. I gently tried removing after applying wd40 with no luck. Is there a trick to getting it off?

Re: Mercury Lower unit fit problem

These dowel pins do stick pretty good due to tight tolerances/corrosion.
You might have to use a little heat to it (preferably the one in the exhaust housing, leave the one in the lower unit, if possible.) and use vise grips or linemans pliers to twist and pull down. Hope this helps.

Added a little heat and it came right out. Thanks for the help!
