I have a 1997 40 Hp Johnson (J40TLEUC) that needs a new pinion and forward gear. My question is this: If the new pinion is the same thickness as the old, do I need to do the driveshaft setup with the special shimming tool? My guess would be that I do not have to. Also, is there an easy way to remove the two driveshaft bearings pressed into the gearcase forward of the forward gear without using any special tools?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: question for DHADLEY or any other knowledgeable reader

I know folks who change gears and don't reshim. Sometimes it works but I've never done it that way. The thickness may or may not be the same and the torque on the nut may have been different than what the book says. Where the pinion gear seats may or may not be different. Can you replace the pinion without checking? Sure. Will it work? I'm sure it has but I wouldn't do it.

As for the bearings I've always used the correct tools, just always seemes easier.
