1986 Merc. outboard-locked in forward shift position

My 1986 Merc. outboard 75 hp. seems to be locked in forward all the time. I can't get it to go into neutral or reverse. the control cables seem to be functioning correctly. seems the problem could be in the gear case. Could use some help to correct the problem. thanks, billyboy210

Disconnect the shift cable and try to shift it manually. If you can then you have a cable or adjustment problem. If not you will have to investigate the lower unit.
