Got a 1993 Johnson 20 HP. I am changing the water pump impellor, when I pulled the LU off this 10 inch long black plastic tube fell out. The manual says it is a Driveshaft Spacer. Never saw one before. The top end of it was melted a bit and has a hole in it.

My motor used to jingle at idle and I think it was this thing ratteling around in there

What is it for? What does it do??

I would say it's the water tube. Does it look like #71 in this picture?
If so, that is what it is. Got the pic from www.shop.evinrude.com You can click parts, then chose your year, then hp, then model #, and you can then click on categories and pull up the diagrams of the parts.

The spacer keeps hot exhaust and hot water away from the driveshaft and water pump.

Called "impeller housing spacer" in the parts list and is #64 in the diagram. If it has hole in it it will need replacing together with new O rings # 79 top and bottom.

Better diagram here

The spacer is $7.12 according to the site I gave above, the o-rings are $.99/ea and you need 2.
I looked at the wrong shaft in my first response, sorry, got too excited or something. LoL

it helps keep water away from the driveshaft, and splines into the crank shaft. so they do not rust together.
