96 gm 350 tbi 5 system Bravo3, After 3 yrs of ripping up starters and flywheels and taking it to a couple of Mercruiser dealers I finally found an independant shop that would guarantee to find the problem . no fix =no bill
So I decided to see just how good he is. After 2 days he called me, told me it is fixed I said let it sit for 2-3 days start it cold & let me know how it starts.
So he did just that , I get a call later The flywheel kicked back into the starter ripping the nose cone off the starter. He knew it had to be in the ign system He disconected the plug wires while cranking the motor w/ a timing light watched the timing . he was getting 50 deg btdc during during cranking as soon as it would start it would drop back to 8 deg btdc He replaced the ign module --- problem solved it now cranks & starts w/ perfection The morale of the story is that ign modules can partly fail & still work . Has anyone ever herd of this before?
