1977 25 johnson water pump

tell tale visibly spraying, lightly misting at exhaust port but motor seems unusually hot to the touch. just purchased this outboard so im not real familar with it. any method other than water temp. gauge to determine proper cooling ? ran in test barrel only. any info. will be appreciated.

First if you don't know the age of the impeller it should be changed.
In barrel be sure you have the water up to the mounting bracket like it would be on a boat at rest.Water should burble out the relief port on the leg.
Motor has a thermostat on the head.Could have failed or plugged,restricted.
Fully warmed motor the head should be to hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you.BE CAREFUL
