Shift Linkage on a '90 evinrude 140

Ok, so I found out that I had water in my lower unit. I want to take it off so I can repair it, but it looks like the only way to disconnect the shift rod is to take the carbs completely off... am I missing something? It looks like I could possibly get to one of the bolts, but the one facing forward is also angled up towards the carbs. Hopefully there is an easier way to disconnect the shift rod, if not I am just going to have to let the boat sit unused until I can afford to have a professional repair it.:(
