First you should never disassemble a flywheel sxcept to change the flex plate, never put a puller on the outside flange as it can warp and cause the flex plate to crack. Get the Mercury type puller so you don't damage the hub and it should come off.

Laddie's is correct you need the tool like below:

Flywheel Puller
201
Pro Marine

Flywheel puller for Mercury outboards. Threads go into flywheel and center screws into it and pushes against the crankshaft to loosen the flywheel.

Drive, I pulled the flywheel hub on my inline six with a harmonic balancer puller and teo or three 5/16 fine thread bolts.

On the inline motor it was not necessary to remove the flywheel hub, unless you needed to change the top main bearing. I have not yet taken my Merc V6 apart (knock wood), so I do not know if you need to remove the flywheel hub to overhaul.

Anytime you pull on the outer diameter of the hub you stand a good chance of distorting it. That's not my idea it comes from Mercury Marine.
