just got my first boat and motor. well to come to find out that the 65hp motor has a bad piston. did compeson test on all 3cyl on had 0 on #1 and 135 on #2 and 135 on #3. so pulled head and found #1 cyl had gone bad. so is there any one that may have pistons for 1973 evinrude motor65hp??? or know where i can find new ones or used?
Try sea-way.com. The shop.evinrude.com site says that the part is "dealer direct now," which means that Sea-Way may not have it (they are a BRP NOS warehouse), but its worth a try. If you can't find a new one, you may have to go with a used piston and a set of new rings.
Another possibility is to pick up a parts motor with a good powerhead. That route may be easier from a parts standpoint, and is a lot less work.
Sorry to hear of your bad luck, but at least you have learned one thing - bring the compression tester before you buy! I also hope that you have had a word or two with the seller. While he/she may not have known exactly what was wrong with it, even someone with minimal mechanical aptitude should have known that something was wrong.
we all need to support iboats marine store when ever possible. you get, competitive prices. fast shipping, top notch customer service. also it provides us, this great FREE forum.
Pistons should be available through you OMC dealer. You will need to take the motor apart, have the cylinder bored and replace seals etc. With a cylinder in real bad condition there may be a con rod problem or a crankshaft and bearings problem. If you are not familiar with rebuilding it can be a painfull learning experience. The big question is do you think it is worth the cost of rebuilding. To find this out you need to know all the parts needed and what you will need to do.
