I have recently purchased a 2005 Johnson which has seen very little use and is in excellent condition.
When I fitted the motor to the boat and place the tilt/run lever in the run position and in forward gear, the motor still appears to be in a locked position and does not lift up with reasonable pressure applied.
I also use a 7.5 Mercury which is an older motor without a tilt/run lever, when in forward gear it lifts up easily to avoid damage when hitting submerged logs etc.
Is this normal for the Johnson or do I have a problem.
Thanks for your help.

normal, it has a pressure lock, if you are boating in an area with a lot of known obstructions, unlock the motor, but when you put it in reverse, do not rev, as the motor will lift.

Thanks heaps tashasdaddy,
I have just been down to the shed, made the unlocking adjustment, and it works a treat. I will make sure I lock it in when reversing on the water.

Your advice is appreciated.
Thanks again,

Kev.

some of the newer one do not have that, they automatically lock when going into reverse, and are free in forward. nice feature.
