My 78 model 40hp 402 electric start stator died. The cdi replacement stator #174-5255 replaces the (oem) 398-5255. It also replaces the 398-4770 (different year model 40 hp 402, I think.) stator. I've located a new in box 398-4770 stator at a great price. My question is will the 398-4770 stator work in my motor? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi that should work , the 398-4770 was from 70-71 engines , in any of the replacement parts store I`ve checked ( I have a 1974 402 ) the 5255 stator replaced all of the 4770 , 5255 , 5256 stators , only I don`t know about the 4770 is if it was a manual start stator , you can tell by the number of wires coming out of the stator , 2 wies only is a manual start stator and won`t charge a battery ,, Bill

I believe the only differance is the wire lengths
