I'm trying to find out what model and year this evinrude is so I can get parts for it and try to fix it. I think its a 9.9hp. I could not find any kind of S/N or data plates

Thanks in advance : )

look for a quarter size silver disc on the block with numbers on it, sure looks rough, do a compression check before spending any money.

There is a plate (seen in the second picture) on the transom mount.

Can you read any of numbers from it?

I'm with the "compression check first" opinion as well.

Ooooooooooo that baby has seen LOTS of salt water use. It looks like an 8 or 9.9

when you see one that has been through a lot of salt water use like this, it maybe a good idea to pull the head and see how the water jackets look and replace the thermostat. Salt water is hell on water jackets and tends to plug things up.

The plate on the transom mount is blank

+1 on the water jackets +2 on the compression test!
Thats why I really need to know what model year for parts.

I haven't looked on the block yet. I'll try to find some numbers there.

Try cleaning up the ID plate on the transom clamp if you have not already. That's where the all important model number will be

You may or may not find the relevant number on a core plug on the block .... don't hold your breath.

I agree it looks like a 9.9 but the 15 has the same power-head so looks almost identical.

I don't think it is an 8 because I don't think they had through hub exhaust which yours looks as though it does have.

Check if it is long or short shaft and let us know how much it weighs.
That will sure differentiate between 8/9.9 HP and 15 HP.
I have a 1992 8HP that is a dead ringer.

The 8 did not have a thru-prop exhaust. So, it's either the 9.9 or the 15 - they both weigh the same though. You're going to need to find a number someplace.

I cleaned the plate on the transom mount and had no luck. the guy I got it from long ago said it was changed from a long shaft to a short shaft. It has a electric start motor if that helps.

Changing from longshaft to standard shaft just means leaving out the leg extension fitting a standard drive shaft and shift rod and shortening the water tube.

9.9 and 15 both had electric start available as an option.

any clue on the year?

if you know the year you could google search for evinrude engines made that year and possibly match it to a pic.
