Earlier this year my 1989 3.0L Mercruiser engine over heat and blown head gasket and the head gasket has been replace and is running fine. Now it is getting white smoke at start up and want to know if I should rebuild the engine or not, is it worth doing? Thanks in advance.

Re: 3.0L rebuild or no

I would'nt just rebuild the engine without first knowing what is actually wrong with it, firstly white smoke is usually caused by water getting into the combustion chambers and burning off, you say that this only happens at start up?? if so then you may have a cracked head if it had over heated enough, and once the engine gets warm the thermal expansion in the head structure seals up the crack. Did you get the manifold checked for leakage?? Who replaced the head gasket?? did they check for straightness or cracks?? What was the initial reason for the overheating issue?? Outdrive pump?? circulating pump?? thermostat?? Lots of questions to answer then maybe we can help you a little more. Good luck.

Pull the head & take it to a machine shop. If it's warped it can be planed if the damage isn't too severe. The head can also be magnafluxed to check for cracks. I'm assuming you torqued the head bolts to the proper specs which is is 90- 100 ft. lbs. What type of head gasket did you use?

What other symptoms do you have? Does it run ok? Does it have good compression?

The first thing to do is check compression and go from there.

Ayuh,...

As noted above,...
That question is Best left Unanswered, til you've atleast done some Diagnostics....

A compression test is a Great place to start...
