Timing please

I have early a 4.3 with the 177 casting block and two piece main seal. I have a book that says time 8 deg BTDC and another says 10 deg BTDC then there is the book that says set to zero then time with light. I would like someone to send a link or explanation the procedure from setting the number one to top dead center and go from there. The engine has the module that does the timing bolted to the riser.
