Mariner forty (40hp) Oil or temp light?

I recenty took out my new boat with the above outboard, after a while i was increasing the throttle and after a few mins of high throttle the oil/temp light started to flash and it cut down revs to a splutter. After off and on again it would keep doing the same unless i kept it at very low revs. the oil res was completly full and no beepng noise was sounded. the engine pumps water fine and could touch the engine without burning my hands so i doubt its over heating. Possible a faulty oil/temp sensor. I dont know which one or what to check.

Can someone please help.
