Hi got a 1974 40 hp ( 402 ) , electric start ,, can I replace the original 398-5255 stator for a manual start 398-5256 stator and eliminate the battery and electric starter in the process ? Will the engine run with the 5256 stator ? thanks Bill ..

Well it looks like it would work but why would you want too? At 135+ compression I would think it would be a hard pull to start if you have the pull starter on the motor. If not then you need to find a used one(nla) and a flywheel change would have to be made and finding the flywheel used again (nla)

just my 2 cents worth

Re: 1974 Merc 402 Stator swap posable ?

Well I found out myself from a Merc. rebuilder about the stator , the manual one can be used , I have electric start and pull start on my engine , $ 89.00 for the stator ( Guaranteed off Ebay ) as compared to $ 338.99 at my Merc dealer , I can still use the starter but was told after about 15 starts will have to charge the battery back up , I bought the engine for $ 200.00 , 3 weeks ago and just wanted to get it running , I also have a 85 Merc 18 XD that I`m trading this week for a Electric start Stator , a set of dolphin planing fins and a 1976 6 HP Johnson kicker that runs good , I wanna do some fishing , lol , I`m now gonna keep the manual start stator for a backup one ,, Bill
By the way the boat in my avitar I picked up for $ 100.00 2 months ago , came with 4 life jackets , 2 Merc. tanks , a spare prop to fit my 40 HP and oars and emergency kit + engine oils and a large funnel , I love this time of year !!!!!!! Not a thing wrong with the boat either !!!
