Trim motor dead on my mercury outboard? HELP!!

I have a 1990's (believe it to be a 91) 90 hp mercury outboard on my 24" pontoon boat. I was going to take it out this morning, however, when I went to move the bow up it just clicked, tried moving the bow down, "click". I have the switch on the throttle control. Well I pulled the covers off the motor, and found the solenoid switches clicking, the top one when going up, and the one under it when going down. I removed the blue (up), and the green (down) wires from the motor at the solenoids and all I get when I hook up a battery source it a humming, like just a draw. Is my trim motor dead? Can it be rebuilt? It is the square mounting type. Does the motor need to be pulled to change this? Thank You, Ernie

1.YES --2.Maybe --3. No it can be removed on the boat but you will need a OEM manual or a lot of luck.

I don't know if luck is going to help. The trim motor is pretty much right up against the transom, there is no room to get any tool(s) between the transom and the motor housing. I am planning on taking the trim motor out and rebuild it. I tapped on the sides of it with a small brass hammer, and it worked fine... I will not be out on the water with it until fixed though. After looking at it thoroughly, I do believe the motor needs to be pulled for this proceedure.
