I just picked up a 92 50hp Merc. Its the 3 cylinder and has tiller steer. It seems to idle a little higher than it should. I'm going to say around 1000rpm or a little more. At idle it trolls a 4mph, it also goes into gear hard. I have the idle stop backed off but the carb's themselves were already bottoming out. Is there any other way of slowing down the idle? There dosnt seem to be an adjustment that stops the linkage on the carbs so I'm not sure where to go. There's an adjustment screw on the top/side of the carbs just behind a jet. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Tim

It sounds like someone has tinkered with the synchronization either the carbs are not synchronized to one another or to the ign. pickup.

From what I've played with them seem to be good toe ach other. I was actually thinking it did have something to do with how the ignition. The fix would be????

Your idle tiiming should be 2 to 6 degrees just a ballpark, if it's more you need to back off the idle screw till it slows down.

By back off I take it you mean unscrew? 1/8 turn maybe?

Thanks

Ok Thanks. Would that possibly have anything to do with a pop at idle while in netural only?

Thanks

A popping through a carb at idle is normally caused by a lean mixture adjustment.

The lowering the idle is richening the mixture correct? Which is why a leaking intake casues an engine to rev up as its leaning it out. Yes?
