Default Mercury control compatibility

I have an '88 Mercury IL4, classic fifty, 45 hp. The single lever remote control, because of years of salt water use by DPO, is about to render up the ghost.

Is there a range of years for which I can look on eBay?

To put the question differently, it seems that there was a major change in design in '93 (judging by the wording of eBay offerings) True? If that's the end of the bracket for what I seek, what's the beginning.

Thanks!

I use my '77 MerControl on my '93 Merc. The mechanics are compatable. The wiring is not compatable and must be adapted. The simplest thing is to get a control with the same wiring harness.

One more thing If your wiring harness is good, you should be able to retrofit it to the newer MerControl by butt splicing the old to the new, or perhaps installing the old harness up to the key into the newer control.

Cool, I can handle the electrics, so long as the mechanical aspects are compatible. You suspect they are, yes?
