From what I experience in my motors, all 1950 vintage, stay with the 24:1 ratio. I have a feelng if you continue to run 50:1..you will be the one screaming when it seizes on you...I have heard that the synthetics will not smoke as much..but stay with the manufacturers rating.

Any JohnnyRude built before 1964 uses 24:1.

And there was an earlier time fence (not sure when) before which it was 16:1.
I remember mixing fuel for an early '50s 7.5 HP that req'd 1/2 pint oil per gallon of gas.

My 58 Lightwin 3hp says on the tank mix 1/2 pint off oil per gallon of gas.

If you do the math on that it equates to 16:1....:)

I own a '58 fastwin and I have an original owner's manual that says 24:1. It runs flawlessly right now because the owner used 24:1 for the last 50 years. I'm not about to change, even if it is "fully jeweled" as they say. I hope you like your fastwin as much as me!:)

The '58 Fastwin was one of the best motors ever built. I've had several of them. They are fully jeweled throughout the powerhead, but a fouled plug is better than a scored piston. If you run it at the 24:1 mix, chances are, it will run you another 50 years.

Re: 1958 fastwin

Many early OMC engines originally used a 16:1 mix with SAE30 non-detergent motor oil.

In 1964 OMC changed the mix for all pre-1964 engines to 24:1 using TC-W outboard oil.

I run my 1948 Gale-Sea King at 24:1 with TC-W3 oil.

I'll stir the pot here. I have a 58 Fastwin that runs like a top on 24:1 mix. I also have a 57 Johnson FD 11 with the original tank that says: " Mix one US pint of Johnson or Evinrude outboard oil with a full tank of gas for a ratio of 1 to 50". Now I don't run any of my 50s motors on 50:1 and I'm not suggesting any one else should either.

Re: 1958 fastwin

The 1958 18hp Evinrude Fastwin incorporates "all" needle, roller, and/or ball bearings on "all" of its moving parts..... main bearings, connecting rod bearings, and wrist pin bearings.

As such, according to OMC's past recommendations and my personal experience, that engine can safely use the 50/1 fuel/oil mixture.

If just one of the moving parts incorporated what is normally referred to as a "babbit" bearing instead of a roller, needle, or ball bearing, then the recommendation is to use the original 24/1 mixture.

I am not sure that is an original tank for that motor. The 57 had a pressure tank.

I think those of that vintage also were brand specific....Johnson motors came with Johnson tanks....Evinride with Evinrude

Re: 1958 fastwin

That is a pressure tank. I just rebuilt it. I'm would assume that they still made pressure tanks for a few years afte they went to fuel pump motors. So why would they put the 50:1 mix instructions on a pressure tank when we all generally agree that all motors made before 1964 should run at 24:1?

I don't believe that is the original tank, either. The original would say Johnson Mile Master and have 24:1 oiling instructions. However, I can't explain why any OMC pressure tank would have 50:1 oiling instructions either.

Well,as far as originality of the tank, I do'nt know. The old guy I bought the motor from said it was from a friends estate. I have 5 other pressure tanks and they all say 24:1.

I wonder if its a retrofitted single line tank. Attached is the original tank from the 1957 parts catalog.

In answer to the original question, 24:1 is the recommended ratio. However, you can use whatever you like.

In my earlier post I said I just rebuilt it. I saw no evidence of a retrofit. I have an old single line metal tank and I don't see how it could be converted since the pickup is angled not straight like pressure tank. The tank says OMC Galesburg Il. if that might help date it.

That's interesting.... I noticed that the sticker said "OMC accessories" on it. I'm wondering if it was a tank you could buy that back when you could still buy replacement tanks from the dealer in the 60's and that's why it says that....I'll bet F-R or Garry would know!
