Do I really need recirculation valves???

I have an '82 Evinrude 200 #E200TRXCT
It has been sitting since '05.
I changed the plugs, cleaned the carbs and it started right up but wouldn't idle unless I toggled the choke on and off.
I checked the recirc valves and only one was working. So, I took out the rubber part now it flows freely like the rest of them.
Now it seems to idle ok. Will I have any serious problems down the road?
Help!!!

Whether you keep the recirc valves or not, clean the carbs.

Thanks for the update on the year model! I don't know why I thought it was an '82.

I cleaned the carbs as best I could, the lines too!

What about those recirc. valves, What are the potential consequences for operating without them?

Admittedly, I don't understand their function completely myself. However anything that redistributes oil, especially to the center main bearing would seem to be somewhat of a critical component and best not left unrepaired.

They are basically to recirculate unburned fuel / oil rather than to have it possibly end up in the water. While some do go directly to main bearing areas their main function is not to oil the bearing. The bearings all get oiled as a natural function of running the motor. Early crossflow designs did not have recirc valves and they ran just fine.

Right now, the valves are in but allow flow in both directions. I'm gonna play with it today and I'll post what happens.
Do you guys think it would be better to plug them on both ends of the tube?

It is better to have them working properly as opposed to allowing flow in both directions. You are testing the recirculation check valves at the intake manifold, right?

I found that three out of four of mine checked good after soaking in Isopropyl Alcohol for a few days.
