I'm having some trouble pulling the flywheel on my '69 Evinrude 33 hp. I plan on changing the points, coils, etc. Does anyone know the recommended method? I've tried a harmonic balancer puller, but the 3 threaded holes near the shaft are only 1/4 inch, therefore the bolts are way too wimpy to really crank on it. Can I use a 3 jaw puller on the outside diameter? I'm nervous about deforming the flywheel since it seems like pretty lightweight stuff.

Thanks for your input!
The harmonic balancer puller is the way to do it.
Pulling on the rim with a three-jaw is a fast way to need a new flywheel to replace the one you cracked.
Don't even think about pulling on the outside rim. That will destroy they flywheel for sure.
Use the harmonic puller and Grade-8 bolts. Screw the bolts in 7/16", no more and no less. Then give it heck. It WILL come off if you pull hard enough and it does take a LOT of pull. You could lift a Humvee with those three Grade-8 bolts, so don't worry about them breaking. If the puller breaks, get a better puller.
When you put it back on, the flywheel and shaft tapers must be clean and dry and you MUST use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 100-105 ft lbs. Again, failure to do so will destroy your motor.
you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.
