I rebuilt the water pump and replaced the thermastat on my 15hp evinrude but when it runs for about 10 min it gets hot and dies and then it wont start till it cools down it seems to push pleanty of water thru the pee hole but the water gets very hot what would cause this
The water flow is through the engine to the thermostat or bypassing the engine, which is why tell-tales indicate that the pump is working but cannot tell you if the water is going through the cooling passages of the engine.
y wouldnt the t stat work if u justed replaced it mmm.. well on my evinrude the t stat is right at the top of the head and i would just take a hose at low pressure and try to blow it out idk lol?
That's killing your engine. I would suggest pulling the stat and leg and direct connecting a garden hose to the water tube and flushing the engine through the thermostat hole. You must have a blockage if your getting good flow to the pee hole. While the stat is out I would also suggest placing it in a cup of boiled water and visually checking to make sure it opens up. Just because it's new doesn't mean it works although my guess is that it will work properly. Beyond that maybe the water tube grommet isn't lined up at the pump but then you wouldn't be getting a good stream at the pee hole. Best of luck. Rick.
Some 15hp have a grommet on top of water tube that turns itself insideout and restricts water flow. Unfortunatly powerhead has to come off to change it.
if your impeller and thermo are ok,the culprit is probably a collapsed grommet that is located at top of water tube below the powerhead,it is a very common problem on the 9.9 and 15,powerhead needs to be removed to expose the grommet
