Alpha I outdrive woes

02 SeaRay 280DA w/T 4.3's and Alpha I outdrives. When trailering the boat yesterday the port side outdrive will only go down approx. 1/4 and then made a screeching noise and stopped. It will go up all the way with the trailer switch but again, only 1/4 way down. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The scraper seal in the ram end caps have leaked and allowed water into the outer section of the end cap and it's corroded and is clamping on the rod. The reason it will go up is because up pressure is about 3,000psi and down pressure is only about 700... You need to replace the end caps before you do any damage to the rods.

If you NEED to get the drive down, then have someone stand on it while you press the switch. Beware that you will run the risk of scratching the rod if you do that, and it will leak oil and water forever, even with new end caps.

It's currently 8.13 am on Tuesday... I'm actually on a boat 200 miles out to sea in the South China Sea, 7*10'N, 103*46'E, and it's the same time in Perth.....

I operate and maintain ROVs... Underwater robots. Used mainly in the oil and gas industry....

Currently working in 53 metres (170 feet), which is quite shallow for us. I prefer the deeper water, anything over 200 metres (650 feet). We are capable of operating up to about 3000 metres (10,000 feet). Deepest I've had a vehicle is 1400 metres (4,600 feet). It's dark down there

Nope, don't suffer 'mal de mare'... Not good if you're at sea for 8, 9 weeks at a time....
