Why on the early model 70's evinrude and johnson engine they turn over real slow. I have a strong battery inline and new plugs. I have a johnson engine and don't know what year it is. If I had to quess I think it is a 1970 to 73. The front of the motor cover has power shift # on it and it has a single control for the motor. I put new plug in the motor and it still turn over slow. I can take the plug out and it turns freely. Put the plugs back in and turns slow. I change starter and that didn't work. I look on the transom plate and there no number on there. There is a tag but know number. I put a strong battery inline and that did't work. I need help .

Re: Starting Problem

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Starting Problem

Are the starter repair kits I see on ebay worth doing?

Kit Contains:
End frame with brushes & bushing
Drive End Bushing
Starter Drive

I have the same problem with my starter but I haven't tried troubleshooting it yet. The guy at the local repair shop told me that it is a common problem with these Johnson starters and even the new ones might work for a little while and then turn slow like mine. He said that they added more windings to the newer starters to try to alleviate this problem.......I don't know.
