Most Evinrudes or Johnsons are not even heard, they are so far ahead of anything else on the water thay are out of hearing range.

Yes they can be noisy, but it depends on what noise you are talking about.

They are a two stroke, and made to run like a bat out of h***.

Yeah, except for the Mercury in front of 'em.
They use Johnnyrudes around here to push barges.

Do you have the top cover on? How about the air box on the carbs? A two stroke engine has a certain amount of sound and intake noise is the loudest. If you have metallic rattles or other noises a description would help, what speed, load, other conditions. I don't mind the sound of a good running engine, other noises are not good.

mine is loud under hard load but when in plane it gets quieter and is remarkably quiet with the cover on. I saw a boat so dam loud the driver must be deff but it was going about 80! i think it was about to blow up. it was loud at a mile away

Like mentioned. it depends on what noise you're talking about. That's a carb'd motor so you're going to hear some air intake noise. If the motor is raised for max performance you might be talking about exhaust noise especially if the inner exhaust housing seal is bad / missing. If it has OE pistons in it they are cast and will be noisy especially if it has a lot of hours.

It's probably normal engine noise. I have been used to a 35hp Evinrude, that was a bit noisy but the 70, being a much bigger engine is a lot noisier, or seems so to me. I'll get used to it though, I love the power it has. A friend who I sometimes fish with has a big Yammy 2-stroke, very quiet compared.

2 windsurfers boards and a welded aluminum frame bolted on ans a plywood floor and a transom...
