mer 400 water pump repair

Have installed repair kit but am unable to reinstall lower unit. Shaft hits something about an inch from seating. Any suggestions?

Move the shift level a little and see if it seats...

You may need to rotate the flywheel clockwise a little for the drive shaft to engage the crankshaft. HTH
