I have a 2003 8hp 2-stroke that quit streaming water out of the tale tale.. replaced impeller and ensured the lines were clear. Not fixed. Replaced the whole water pump and still no water only exhaust and it gets hot fast. Is there someting I am missing?? Thanks

Re: Cooling problems

Pull the thermostat cover and inspect the thermostat. Fire up the motor and see if you get water gushing out the open 'stat hole.

If you do, throw the cover on temporarily without the 'stat and see if you get water thru the motor. If you do, most likely problem lies with the 'stat. Don't know if these 8's are the same as the older ones, but the telltale doesn't run all the time, only when the thermostat cycles.

Regardless of telltale, if the motor is getting real hot that's a problem! The block should never go much above 130 deg F (somewhat comfortable to touch but getting on the warmish side) and if it's too hot to hold your hand on that's far too hot.

The exhaust manifold cover should stay fairly cool even when the block is warmed up.

Anyway, check out the 'stat and let us know what you find..........ed

Re: Cooling problems

Maybe not, if we had a Serial # we could pull up a parts diagram and check. If it does have one, it should be under a small cover on the cyl head, held on by 2 or 3 bolts/screws.

If it doesn't have a 'stat there could be other issues like salt/silt buildup. Very handy with a 'stat 'cause you'll know right away how much water is getting up to the powerhead when you fire it up with the 'stat removed and cover open.
