I am rebuilding this carb. I do not remember there being a gasket or seal around the "main jet or main drop tube" when I opened it up. The Evinrude manual does not show one either. Does anyone know if one is needed here?

I am including the page from the parts manual and a photo of my car without any seal in place. Can I close it up like this or do I need a seal/gasket.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1957 35 Lark Carb Question

I looked in my Seloc manual 56-70 and it showed a very similar carb (type 2) with a gasket probably cork like mine but it's a 61 40hp Lark type 3. If it has a machined face it's a pretty good indicator it had one. I'm by no means a expert and just trying to help as I've gotten in this great source of knowlege . Paul

Look carefully at the carb itself. Paying particular attention to the high speed needle and associated passages in the carb bowl. That will tell you whether there needs to be a gasket there or not. (If there was no gasket there how can the needle valve have any effect on the high speed mixture?)

Also I would definitely suggest a new float while you're in there too. Good luck!

On that carburetor, there was NO gasket used on that nozzle tube. It was just a machined fit.

I have placed a cork on there and tightened it down... Do you think that will cause a problem now if I remove it?

It doesn't belong there..... and the added stress upon the float chamber retaining screws may very well cause those small retaining flange holes to break away from the float chamber.

Re: 1957 35 Lark Carb Question

i ran out to the garage, and like a crazed pit crew mechanic, removed the starter, carb, removed the washer and put it all back in 15 minutes... thanks for the verification! What are the chances that having the washer in there (temporarily) screwed up the proper fit? What should I look for as a symptom if it is failing?

If fuel does not drip out between the upper and lower body, all is well.

I'd also put a new float in there... Less than $10...
