Hard starting 4 stroke

I need help. I purchased a brand new 2007 9.9 Johnson 4 stroke w/electric start. The motor runs fantastic except for one thing, "It's hard to start when cold." By cold I mean sitting for more than a week. I follow all the starting procedures as stated in the manual but sometimes it takes 5 minutes of cranking, priming and choking to get it started. One you get it started it's great until the next time it sits for more than a week. I had it to two separate dealers who told me it's the nature of a 4 stroke and to live with it, but, I don't buy it. Anyone else have this problem or a solution to this problem? I don't even have 15 hours on this motor.

Thanks,
Vince

wow they told you to live with it!?

the same dealer you bought it from?

you havent by chance flooded it and fouled the plugs have you?

if i paid that much for a motor i would expect it to fire right up too.

No, I'm not flooding it, it seems as if the butterfly is not closing down all the way when you choke it. Dealers checked it out and said it was. I was told this model has an accelerator pump and I should try to put it in gear and twist the tiller a few times which will act as a primer. Have not tried this as yet but I get the distinct impression that this is a problem with a lot of 2007 & 2008 Johnson small block 4 strokes.

Re: Hard starting 4 stroke

sorry i didnt mean are you flooding it i meant have you or anyone else ever flooded it?

sometimes spark plugs can be kind of finiky.

i dont understand why the dealer wouldnt look into it a litle deaper for you instead of telling you to pump the gas......i had an old truck that you had to pump the gas on before i knew how to fix cars.

it just seems to me that a new motor shouldnt have this prob.

ive never had a 4 stroke muchless a new one....i didnt know they had an accel pump like a car!!!

maybe one of the brains will pick up this discussion and help you out.

sorry i couldnt help you, good luck!

Re: Hard starting 4 stroke

Hi,
5 Minutes of cranking to start a 4 stroke engine? It does not sound right. Before you crank it up.. do you pump the fuel till the it is hard .. Second is it aninjection or carbed engine? And then you should set the idle little bit higher than idle setting and then crank ti up.. it should start right up..
