I am normally quite satisfied with using Wally worlds lower unit oil at about $3.50 a QT. Mercury Lower unit oil goes for $16+ a Qt at my local dealership. Can there be that much difference in the oils?

Do a search... there are MILLIONS of threads on oils...

Like everything else in this world... You get what you pay for....

If you are happy to put cheap oil in your expensive outboard... Go for it!
