Hi
I believe my recently purchased boat is a 15ft Winner, the 70 HP Mariner runs well, but, the engine is in the fully raised position and 'clicks' when selected down, then nothing happens, any suggestions? also where could I download a servce manual.
Thanks
John

Re: Mercruiser Tilt/Trim clicks when selected down but does not move

Get a multimeter and put the black lead on a good ground... put the red lead on the output terminal of the down solenoid (green wire). Press the trim switch... Got 12 volts? then it's the trim motor... No volts? Check the red cable on the other side of the solenoid... Got 12 volts there? Replace the solenoid... no volts... Start looking for a broken cable....

Post the engine serial number and I'll see if I have a wiring diagram...

Chris..........
Also the engine is a Mariner, not a Mercruiser...

Engine is 1980.... You said that you have a 'click' when you trim DOWN... If you have 2 solenoids, not just the one like this drawing, let me know and I'll swap the drawings... This one is for the way the engine came from the factory.... Someone may have upgraded the trim system in the past...

Trim system wiring diagram...

Hi Chris

Am I correct in assuming that the rams/system are unpressurised when in the 'up position', also, I have a selector for 'trailer' what does that do?

Kind regards

With the system you have, there is no pressure in the system, UP or DOWN... The fluid level should be checked wit the engine in the full DOWN position.

"TRAILER" is to lift the engine beyond the TRIM range... The trim UP button should bring the engine up only to the limit of the trim range, not all the way up... If the limit switch is faulty (common) then the trim switch will run the engine all the way up...

Nope.... That's the manual release valve... Open it to lower and raise the engine if the pump dies....

I also have this problem... i got 12 volts with the meter hooked to the red lead on the output terminal of the down solenoid while pushing down on the trim switch. I also have 12 volts red cable of the other solenoid... how do i make sure its my trim motor & where is the best place to get a new one without damaging the pocket book?
