35 hp problems

Hi, this is my first time posting on iboats. My question is, I have a 1976 35hp johnson that will only run if the choke is closed. I put it in the shop and they said the carb needed to be rebuilt. I bought the rebuild kit, cleaned it out with compressed cleaner and put the kit in the carb but it is still doing the same thing. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you are not getting enough fuel...or sucking air.
Have you checked the lines and the primer bulb. I have seen the primer bulb do this. Clogged filter? Unless I'm forgetting something, the only other thing would be the fuel pump.
