how can I tell if my 1996 force 120 is an ELPT or an EXLPT?

I have a 1996 Mercury Force 120 and when browsing forums and bloggs for basic info I come across two types of the force 120, the ELPT or the EXLPT. Is there a simple way to determine the difference, do I need to just look up my serial number? I was also told to replace the lower unit oil usually once every 6 months or at least once a year. Please excuse me if my verbage or descriptions are incorrect, I am slowly learning about outboards and how to do my own repairs. Is replacing the lower unit oil a simple process that someone can explain in a forum or should I buy a manual? Sorry for the long post, it's my first.
Thx--

The EX is "extra long" 25" shaft. They're pretty rare, usually found on offshore boats. To be sure, measure from the cavitation plate (plate over prop) to the bottom of clamp bracket where goes over the transom. It's either 20" or 25".

Changing the lower unit lube is pretty straightforward.

Draining.

1. Place brain pan under skeg.

2. Remove the upper vent plug.

3. Remove the lower drain plug.

Filling.

1. Place the lube bottle in the lower drain plug hole and pump the fluid in.

2. When the fluid reaches the top vent hole, it's full.

3. Replace the top vent plug.

4. Replace the lower drain plug.

Make sure you replace any seals on those plugs. Get some extras.

Get a manual, it's a great resource for future maintenance.
