Hi all... i have a 1991 evinrude 175hp crossflow which i just changed the voltage regulator on and now the engine severely backfires and wont start..I had to remove the flywheel to change regulator and my manual says that the shaft should be keyed but mine isnt? so does the position of the flywheel matter or is there anything else that could cause the timing to be that far out? I also changed one of the flywheel magnets while i had it off as the magnet had moved and was touching one of the other magnets... any help would be much appreciated...thanks

the surfaces, have to be totally clean and free of grease, the key has to be in place, or the timing will not be right. the flywheel has to be torqued to specs, or the key will shear, and you will be doing it all again. the shaft and flywheel has a slot in them for the key.
