Hey guys,

I just bought a boat with a 67 Evinrude 55hp. I hooked up some new gas and ran it for about a minute with no problems. Then the prop blew a lot of smoke and I found this black oil coming from around the prop. Now when I start it it stalls right out, but no smoke. I've asked around some of my friends and they think its a gasket and bearings? I looked on here and thought it may just be the gas mixture? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you use muffs and a hosepipe when you started it ???
Should do a few of the basics like a compression test, inspect the plugs and check spark. Impeller should be changed (especially if you started it up dry) and change lower unit oil checking for colour and cosistency when you drain it. I advise getting a manual for your motor.

Thanks for the welcome.

To be honest I'm pretty new to boating. I basically just got it home, changed the gas and started it. Was there supposed to be a hose hooked up to it?

yep. you can get some flushers from walmart for about $5 or you can put it in a tank or garbage can just make sure the lower unit is in the water far enough for the water intake to be u nder water.

Alright, so would that be the cause of the smoke/oil leaking out the way it is?

Well I've talked to a few more people and they seem to think it might be burnt oil because the engine hasn't been ran for a while, same with the smoke. It's black watery oil though?
