I have a 1976 Johnson 115hp outboard. I don't know a whole lot about boat motors, but can anyone tell me how to clean out the carbuerator? The boat repair shop said it needs to be cleaned and they wanted to charge me $250 to clean it and replace plugs! I think I can do it myself with a little help!! Thanks.

Re: How Do I Clean Carb?

The carb needs to be taken apart, soaked in carb cleaning solvent (overnight is good). Freeze plugs may need to be removed to get at all ports. Some parts are replaced and all new gaskets used. Typically, a solvent tank is used with a wire mesh basket to hold the parts. Everything is blown clean/dry with compressed air and back together with everything. A shop manual is useful for this drill, especially if you havent done it before. A link and sync is done after the carbs are remounted.

You have two double throat carburetors.

They are not that complicated but the linkages that connect them can be puzzling.

If you really want to do it yourself, get a manual. About $30.00.

$250.00 for that job is not bad.
