Want to ( finally) rebuild the WP on my 96' 15 merc. Do I need a water pump housing and gasket kit or just the impeller? As memory serves, the WP had a stainless housing from the factory.

Re: Water pump kit or impeller?

I just replaced mine on an 96 90hp evinrude. I got the kit which contained the housing and everything, including the lube for the driveshaft. Im glad I went that route since when I took it apart the stainless housing showed signs of wear. In time it proablly would have led to premature failure of the impeller. So in my opinion replace it all.... one less thing to worry about :)

Second the recommendation on the waterpump repair kit (upper housing cw/insert, gaskets, key, wear plate, impeller). You won't know the condition of the stainless insert in your pump until you take it apart. I have seen some badly worn and others like new.

For the few extra dollars, get the kit and do the job right. You can't go wrong.

I agree.
I have a '87 50hp apart right now. The SS cup is scored.
I'll be getting the whole kit which runs about $50.
