Angry mariner tachometer going ballistic!

i just installed a brand new teleflex tach for outboards on my 1982 mariner 70hp. i used all new wiring, heat shrink connectors and ring terminals, i have a good ground and all other gauges work properly, however, when i run the motor the tach will smoothly increase to 6000 rpm when the boat is half throttle, also it will go down when i increase the throttle and it is very erratic at other points. i have searched this forum and all i can find is to clean terminals, is it possible that i could have a frayed wire in the original harness? any ideas would be great, thanks everyone.

If the tach reads 6000 at half throttle you need to reset the pulse setting on the back. Maybe this will help. http://www.downloadingfiles.co.uk/te...es/page342.pdf
