I have a 1977 viking deck boat that has a mercury outboard on it with a 20 inch transom to cavitation plate measurment. Can I replace this with an evinrude outboard that has a 22 inch transom to cavitation plate measurment and will all cables and lines hook up accordingly without fabrication? This is my first boat so if anyone knows a good book I could look at to learn about this stuff, would be great. thanx

Re: switching mercury to evinrude outboard

The length will be OK. OMC ran their cavitation plates deeper on the older models.

As for the controls, in a word: No. In fact, even with the same manufacturer, the controls changed often. You need the year/model of the motor and go from there.
