This may sound like a couple of dumb questions but, I’m looking into replacing my existing pontoon bunk style trailer with a scissor or up-down style pontoon boat trailer and have a couple basic questions.

1. Can you use these type of trailers to launch a pontoon boat on regular boat ramps at the marinas or do you have to have a flat spot in order to use the trailers for launching?

2. Can they be used to tow a boat for say 5 to 10 miles to the marina?

yes to both questions, i prefer an long tongue on my trailers so the trailer get farther into the water. i have a bunk toon trailer now. you have to watch your speed, and corning with a scissor trailer, as the wheel base is narrower.

Thanks once again Tashasdaddy. You have been a wealth of information. I do have one other question.

If I use some type of Aluminum anti-fouling bottom paint on my pontoons would this provide some type of barrier of protection for my pontoons when setting on the carpeted bunks of my trailer.

I hear that if you let a pontoon boat set on a trailer that has been in salt water, something about the chemicals in the treated wood of the bunks and salt water cause a reaction that will eat away at the aluminum pontoons. So I was just wondering if the anti-fouling paint would provide protection against this.

i do not use treated wood on bunks, never have never will. then no need for paint on aluminum. anodes for electrolysis, is recommended.

Anodes have to be in water to do any good and won't prevent chemical reaction from pt wood bunks. Antifouling paint will get eaten too. Use an epoxy barrier coat on the toons to prevent this. Buy it ready to go or mix your own. It needs to be used under antifouling paint too.

By the way some of the scissors trailers are pretty stable. That one I used was awesome. We trailered 4 hours on the freeway at 65-70MPH and it was VERY stable. No rocking and swaying at all. We were shocked as we both expected it to be easily blown around if nothing else.

i have to agree some are stable, the main problem is the trailer capacity has to be more to handle the load.

Yeah, this one was huge. I think it could handle up 30' pontoon boats or something. It had duel axles and full size tires.

Mine was a 12' deck on 16' pontoons. It looks silling hanging on to the back of this trailer!
