Well, if someone else posted this I would say they are a fool but here goes. I have a mid 70s Chrysler 8 horse trolling motor that I have not used before, it came with the boat. Anyway maybe a year ago I thought I should drain the bottom end in case there was water in it and it would freeze. I am sure I thought I would be smart enough to fill it before I would use it but I didn't. I hooked it up and went fishing a few days ago, and the thing ran like a watch, for awhile anyway. Suddenly the motor stopped and I could not budge it, I knew right away what happened. My question is, does anyone know what is frozen and if there are parts for these things anymore? I ordered a parts manual but it won't be here for awhile.

You do realize this is the "electrics and electronics" forum. There is a separate Chrysler forum in which this question should be asked. But since you did post it here, the bearings in the lower unit are toast. Parts are available but you will need to do some looking. You might be better off trying to find a used lower unit. Might be cheaper as you generally need special tools to work on lower units.

Chances are better then good the whole lower unit is shot. Biggest problem you will face is that the 8 hp is not very common. I have been with Iboats for around 5 years now and I had to look up 8 hp cause I never heard that chrysler made one. Hopefully Frank or someone can help you on what ever other size lower units will work on that motor.

Re: Chrysler 8 HP frozen lower unit

Thanks for all the help, I did not realize I posted it in the wrong area. You can imagine that anyone that doesn't put oil in a lower unit before use may have trouble with other things too. I want to fix it partly because I am attached to it and it the motor runs so well. I don't get to fish much so I don't need a newer, better one. Most of my boating is for tubing/skiing or pleasure cruising. Thanks again, this is about the coolest forum (on anything) I have ever seen.
