Alpha I Gen II Gear Lube Leak

I have a 2001 Alpha I Gen II sterndrive which is leaking gear oil. My sterndrive has the gear lube monitor. It appears that the leak is occuring inside the transom but I'm not sure if the gear lube hose is leaking, or if the leak is a result of a bad seal in the drive shaft housing.

The entire gear lube monitor will empty (last time out, ran the boat for 2 1/2 hours and had to fill the monitor twice) even when the boat is sitting. When I unscrewed the vent hole on the outdrive (with the leg in the full trailer up position), gear oil ran out. It seems that I will have to remove the power steering assembly to access the quick connect coupling on the gear lube hose(I suspect the leak is at the connection).

Could a bad O-ring seal in the drive shaft housing be the cause of this leak?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard rcar,...

You've been Studdering,...

I'm guessing that you surf by using your Backbutton alot,...
That would explain the 3 threads you posted on this topic,...
And,.. I'm guessing Don will delete the other 2,... Or this 1....:D
Anyways,.....
Liberal use of the Refresh Button will alleviate the Problem,....
Good Luck,...

Ayuh,... It could be Either...

You should be able to see/ feel along the tube that runs to the transom assembley....
If the Outdrive seal is leaking,.. You'll be seeing/ feeling the oil coming in along the Driveshaft....

Re: Alpha I Gen II Gear Lube Leak

Thanks for the tips on posting.

As for my oil leak...I cannot reach far enough down the oil line to feel if there is a leak at the connection. I think I will have to remove the power steering to be able to get to the connection.

Also, I cannot see the on the inside of the transom to determine if the leak is at the driveshaft. The joys of working in tight spaces.

I did open the vent hole after the reservoir was empty, and oil did run out of the vent hole...so the leg is full right? The leg was in the trailer up position.

Ayuh,.... That would be my guess...

When working on boats,...
You usually have to disassemble a good part of the Boat, to get anywhere near enough to work on the motor or drive....
You need to take apart whatever is in your way to fix it...
The only other place that could possibly be leaking there is the Seal on the input shaft of the outdrive,...
It can leak in thru the bellows,+ into the motor box by the driveshaft coming out of the motor...
It'll cost you a $10. gasket set to pull the outdrive,+ Look....
