Does anyone know how to get the powerhead off of one of these things?? She bubbles water where the powerhead and lower unit meet, but I don't see how they connect (other than the tabs in the front and back of the motor). Any input would be greatly appreciated.
It's a tad older than most engines here. For future questions maybe try the aomci.org site. I also just picked up a '47 SD-15 16hp this past weekend and will probably have questions also when I start working on it.
Post some pics of what you're doing as many, including myself, love seeing photos.
If you have half the luck with yours that I have had with my last two motors from the '40's, you should be fine. My Sportwin and my '41 Merc KB1A both sat for about 20 years (per pervious owners) and both pump like race horses.
Hope yours do the same. I have no idea what they use for water pumps, and I'm not taking 'em apart to find out. If it ain't broke.....
samo_ott, Pictures?!? The credit you give my I.T. skills is totally unwarranted.
I tried to upload them, but they are too big. If you really want to see, go here... http://s462.photobucket.com/albums/q...t=IMG_0002.jpg
Sorry, but it's the best I could do. 16 horse, yes? Now that would be a blast. What does it weigh??

Thanks samo_ott. Most of it was headed toward the dump. That's kinda how I got into this stuff in the first place. I keep crossing paths with stuff that's too nice to let get pitched and too easy to fix.
Freddyray21, two impellers?? Don't even go there. I get nightmares about a Bail-o-matic just thinking of it. Any idea as to why two? And does it look like a newer-type star impeller would fit if it ever came to that? According to a book I've got, wear is supposed to be nill, so hope for a very long life. How is yours coming along?
I'm not, but a few of my outboards are, and they are my youngest, save for the 39 Merc. You saw a B-O-M (now that acronym is prophetic), but did it work?? They say that feature killed many a Scott.
If you understand them, can you explain to me how those scott water pumps prime?? I've got a 10hp apart for a new impeller, and the pump housing sits right under the powerhead. It was a real treat to get apart. Is it just vaccuume??
Thanks anyway. I guess for now this will be another one of my dad's "it works. Just leave it at that" mysteries. So where do we see a pic of your SD? How did you come across it?
don't know why two impellers, but they are in there. I have a bail a matic in the garage now. Might be the next project. I got mine almost ready to fire up. Probably this weekend I will see if it will run for me.
Best of luck with the '48. Have you lifted the powerhead off? That has to be the oddest setup I've ever seen. I have no idea how the water works into/through the head--yet. I saw some very small passages in the leg, but thats about it. They don't seem to connect to anything above. One way to check is very light compressed air & smoke. I've traced a few that way b4. I'd love to see a good shop manual breakdown of that one.
If you need impellers for it down the road, Laings and Twin City Marine seem to have them. If you haven't used it yet, expect the tank to leak at the fuel gauge and the carb to drip at the primer. From what I gather, thats common. I saw a '39 on utube, and the lower unit seems very similar. Maybe a source of parts if ya can find a frozen one.
As for the Scott/McC, if yours is like mine, have an extra pair of hands handy. They are something to get apart. If you need an impeller for it, I'm pretty sure Serria Marine makes them, and I think they can be gotten at Napa. I know they carry that line. I'm going to check on Monday. What year and horse is it?
Thanks for the breakdown, but do you understand how it gets into the powerhead?? Your Scotts should have a tube that fits into a recess at the base of the powerhead, and most others have a tube that goes from the pump to the head, but not the '48 that I saw. Very odd.
Do you have a breakdown for the Scott?? I've got one if you need it. Why are they apart?? Water pumps, gear case issues, or heads?? I'd bet the former.
The one I have is a 10 hp, a '55 I think. The weird thing is that the clamp bracket (where the id tag is) is white, but the exhaust housing is salmon color. I wonder what year this one really is.
Keep me informed as to your progress with all of them.
I have a generic Scott one from a generic book. The Scotts and this Evinrude were given to a guy from another guy. The guy I got them from decided he was in over his head or some such thing and advertised them for free. I went and got them. I think the van with the white coat drivers are here to pick me up now I have to go.
