I don't know the year or model. S/N and model number is illegible. It's supposed to be a late 80's or early 90's. This model has the transmission shifter, throttle and red kill button on the tiller handle. Just purchased the engine and it ran fine until I filled the old metal gas for the first time with fuel/oil. It will start, idle and run only with the choke pulled out. I thought I may have stirred up debris when I added gas. I purchased a new plastic tank with new hoses and obtained the same results. How do I remove the cover and any thoughts on how to proceed.

Regards,

There should be some type of cam lock lever on the rear of the cover. It lifts up or swings down for removal. As far as your fuel issue goes, if it only runs with the choke on, the mixture is too rich. You've probably got some debris in the carb jet sticking it open slightly. The carb will need to be removed and cleaned thoroughly. If you plan to do the repairs yourself get a service manual. They're available here or on ebay or at kencook.com. Hope this helps and welcome aboard!

You may have clogged the carb/filter. When you get teh cover off, see if you can find and clean the fuel filter. You should also replace the fuel line. Many of the older 80's vintage lines /balls breakdown with todays alcohol laced fuels. I've seen countless carb and filter foulings from this.
Still, In the end, a carb rebuild might be cheap insurance and an hour or two well spent. Boats are much easier to row without a dead outboard on the transome. Been there done that.
