I have an older (1972) 40HP that I got and rebuild. My boat is around 1981 and has the newer steering system that comes out of the side of the transom. There was an older gale motor on this boat before and there is an adaptor attateched to the steering tube to connect the older Gale. It has a push pin in the middle that you need to push and turn to lock the sterring tube to the older Gale motor. I have seen same system on 70's Johnson/Rude before. The question is how do I attached the 1972 Merc to my steering tube? All I have on the Merc is a triangular plate at the bottom front of the Merc with a hole that appears to had a bolt in it before.
