I have a 1990/91 3HP Minn Kota trolling motor.The prop pin has rusted into the prop shaft.I let it set and used pentrating oil everyday for 2 months.I have tried squeezing it out with channel lock pliers,pressing it out with a C clamp,and hammering it out.No dice.I also have 2 wire ends in the copper armature wiring that are buried in the copper windings.These look to be factory cut.No chafe or burning.Are the ends supposed to be that way?I wouldn't worry about it but I need to save the case and the armature if possible.The threads on the prop end of the armature are bad,and I may need to replace the armature.Anyone know the thread pitch and size?Maybe I can run a die over the threads to clean them up.
Cut the pin off flush with the shaft. Now use a pin punch to drive the pin out. By hitting the pin you have probably expanded it slightly making it even tighter in the shaft. If you use a good quality drill bit and a slow speed drill you might be able to drill out the pin. While they are stainless, it is not of very high quality steel so it may drill rather easily. But slow speed is required. As for the cut wires -- did this motor run before you took it apart?

It did, until the unit was left sitting in a boat and became completely submerged for a long period of time.Now I have the unit and all I could get was a hum from the motor and electronics.The motor didn't have water in it but the brushes are chipped up really bad.Also, the shaft has rusted inside and has flaked off.The rust has been picked up by the magnets and scored the outside of the armature so bad that the factory paint is nearly gone.If this motor wasn't a freebee I wouldn't bother with it.These units are not popular,but replacement parts are available.So I decided to give it a go,if I can keep cost to half that of a new Minn Kota 55lbs thrust transom mount unit.
If the shaft is rusty inside the unit, it had water in it and it is probably not worth fixing. But that's just my opinion.
The motor is clean and the housing is clean inside.It's the shaft from the control head that runs down to the motor housing.It's rusted inside.I can get the rust out and prevent it's return.The prop shaft is rusty but that can be cleaned up after the pin is removed.So far I have $0 in it and about an hour in time.
