Default Yamaha 150 - electrical harness bad?

All...

I have a 2000 Yamaha 150 outboard (model # DX150TLRY - from the port side transom plate) on my Gulf Coast 20'. My water pressure gauge went out, then my bilge pump quit. While I was idling along (at night), I smelled something like electrical burning. Moderate smoke was coming out of the bilge area and from under the center console. When I turned the accessories off, the smoke cleared an the smell went away. The motor ran fine.

The next day, when I could see into the bilge I turned the accessories back on and found the source of the smoke.

I don't know the name of it, but it appears to be a main electrical harness. It is a squarish, black harness with two 1-inch square fuses plugged into it. It was smoking and the fuses were melted. It has some serious corrosion in it and will need replacing.

I'm assuming that the harness is bad and may be the cause of all of my electrical problems. What I'd like to find out is:

1. What's this thing called?
2. How do I diagnose it to determine that the "harness" is the problem or to track down the real culprit?
3. Where are the best places to find replacement "harnesses"? Is it a Yamaha part or are there other providers?
4. How big a deal is this to replace?

I don't mind troubleshooting, either through a trial and error method or using a multimeter. I just need some direction.

A second part to this is that I was thinking about running new wiring from the bilge to the console (fuse box), anyway. I just don't know how big a deal that is, so I haven't begun. Any tips on that would be appreciated, too.

Thanks,

Halo

Default Re: Yamaha 150 - electrical harness bad?

Okay, it turns out that this is the relay switch to my jack plate. It was disconnected when I had my powerhead replaced. Something is wrong with the jackplate pump/motor and so the shop never reconnected it.

I don't know why the switch melted down, though. I'm still trying to work that out.

And I've pretty much answered my own question about the wiring job, too.
