1986 60hp VRO stalls out when shifted into forward and reverse...

starts well, idles and revs well in neutral, once shifted into gear stalls out right away. NEED HELP!! boat is in the water right now and we have fish to catch!! lol

Jesse,spark and compression tests are a start.The symptoms can be for a few ailments.Was the boat laid up.Possible dirty carb.Also,do you have a fuel/water seperator.If so check for water in fuel.Otherwise,pump some gas from the fuel inlet hose into a jar and check to see if water is present ,if so you can remove the brass plug on bottom of carbs and drain.You may have water in fuel,a plug not firing or dirty carb.They are 3 most common possibilities ,assuming the compression is good in all cylinders.report back with your finding.Mike

Mike, before getting a chance to read your reply my Dad and I went down to the boat to reinstall battery after charging, and check for spark. removed the plug from the bottom cylinder and out came about half a cup of gas! not thinking about what might happen, I put the plug back into the wire and told Dad to turn the key. Next thing I know I'm getting a face full of fire, my shirt soaked in gas and on fire, as well as my forearm and left ear! Thankfully I was standing in the water when it happened and quickly put myself out. I sustained first degree burns to my right forearm, left jaw, and left ear!! Wont be doing that again anytime soon. As for your other suggestions, we have now decided to seek the help of a qualified tech to assist us, but thank you for your help

Glad your ok.I was a fireman and a boat mechanic.Saw too much of that happen wil not so positive a result.A recent memorable one was a guy working on a bilge pump/Small 70 footer.Decided to melt the srink wrap with a lighter.Yep,boom.1st 2nd and 3rd burns.Eventually turned out ok.Boss had to buy the boat,as for John the Mechanic.No longer John A mechanic.Last I heard he was detailing cars.Then there are the many guys that had their rod holders used as the fuel fill.Got to watch those young or high bait/fuel guys.Fill a bilge with gas,you got a problem,and the foam filled hulls dont like it either.Glad you got a mechanic.Bet it will NEVER happen again.Be safe ,happy boating.Oh ,thanks for the lesson,believe it or not,I m sure you helped someone avoid that mistake.MIKE
